Jim was born at the Pentland’s Maternity Hospital in Buchanan Street, Devonport, on 2 Feb 1929, to parents Gladys Esther Mason (20 May 1893-1983) (nee Mays) and David William Mason (1880-1949) (married 1923).
David was a lawyer, first with Fallon and Mason, and then, Caldwell and Mason. David died from pneumonia, after a long stay in the Mater hospital, when Jim was just 21. Jim took over David’s legal practice.
Gladys and her brothers Earnest (Ernie) and Roy were the children of James Mays and Kate. James, and his brother Oliver Mays, were well known members of the Devonport community.
Jim is survived by his wife, Valerie, son Andrew and daughter-in-law Catherine, daughter Katherine and son-in-law Dan, and grandchildren Margaret (Daisy), Benjamin, Constance and Florence.
