Family

Jim was born at the Pentland’s Maternity Hospital in Buchanan Street, Devonport, on 2 Feb 1929, to parents Gladys Esther Mason (20 May 1893-1983) (nee Mays) and David William Mason (1880-1949) (married 1923).

David was a lawyer, first with Fallon and Mason, and then, Caldwell and Mason. David died from pneumonia, after a long stay in the Mater hospital, when Jim was just 21. Jim took over David’s legal practice.

Gladys and her brothers Earnest (Ernie) and Roy were the children of James Mays and Kate. James, and his brother Oliver Mays, were well known members of the Devonport community.

Jim is survived by his wife, Valerie, son Andrew and daughter-in-law Catherine, daughter Katherine and son-in-law Dan, and grandchildren Margaret (Daisy), Benjamin, Constance and Florence.

My dad Arch Brooking knew Jim Mason. Jim lived across the bay from us on Marine Parade. We were on West End Rd, the last house opposite the West End tennis courts. I think Jim knew Dr Peter Cairney as well and when dad purchased ‘Revival’ our Scow and had her moored outside our place in Cox’s Bay, Jim may have been part of the party of men who took her sailing. Dad wasnt a sailor but more into his engines. I still remember that day now some 40 years on. She ‘Revival’ deserved to be sailed and not motored around…she was a grand old boat and prior to dad purchasing her, belonged to Jack Lidgard (Beachhaven) of the Lidgard sail family. I met Andrew once through an old friend I’ve since lost contact with Jennifer Butcher.
